AXLE SHORTNING PART DUEX

HERE IS THE FINSHED AXLE WASHER THAT WAS COUNTERBORED TO ACCEPT THE SHOULDER ON THE AXLE NUT. THIS WAS EASY PART OF THE JOB.

AXLE SHORTNING. THE RIGHT WAY.

AS CHRIS'S CHOPPER BUILD CAME TO A CLOSE. WE FOUND THE AXLE TO BE TOO LONG. AS USUAL NO ONE CAN EXPLAIN WHY THE AXLE IS TOO LONG SO WE HAD TO IMPROVISE. WE FIGURED OUT THE LENGTH AND CHUCKED IT IN THE LATHE USING A 3 JAW AND A STEADY REST. I TURNED THE DIAMETER TO .620(THE FINISHED THREAD IS 5/8-18) I THEN MACHINED THE THREAD BY A PROCESS CALLED SINGLE POINT THREAD MACHINING. USING A SET OF CHANGE GEARS IN MY LATHE GEAR BOX AND A SINGLE POINT THREADING TOOL MADE RIGHT IN THE SHOP I TURNED THE THREAD FORM ONTO THE .620 DIAMETER. ONCE TO THE PROPER DEPTH THE NUT WILL SPIN RIGHT ON. THE OLD THREADED PORTION WAS THEN CUT OFF AND THE END FACED. WE WHERN'T DONE YET. ALSO NEEDED TO COUNTER BORE THE WASHER ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE AXLE. SO A BORING BAR WAS SET UP AND BORED UNTIL THE OUTER DIAMETER OF THE SHOULDER ON THE AXLE NUT WOULD JUST SLIDE IN. THAT'S HOW IT'S DONE. GUY'S NEED TO PAY ATTENTION TO THINGS LIKE THIS BECAUSE YOUR NEW AXLE WILL COST YOU A TON OF MONEY TO FIT ON YOUR YOUR RIDE. THIS JOB TOOK ABOUT 2 HRS AND AT MACHINE SHOP PRICES THE PRICE OF YOUR NEW AXLE DOUBLES IN A HURRY.

Hand made risers!!!!

Our friend and fellow blog poster from time to time Mike Pistello @ Rocket Engineering, made these one off risers by hand for one of King Kustoms bikes which is running a springer. Maybe he will post some progress pics, but its pretty amazing to think these things started as a chunk of metal and Mike hand made these! Mikes a talented dude! They are gettin polished and then they should be done!

Almost there.......

So, I tried a couple different ways to make a bracket for my jockey shift cable. I used Lunchboxs idea of the mounting point, theres really no other way to do it without it looking like a pile of shit. I have to shape the bracket, add some gussets, and I think it will be ok. Had a setback with the exhaust so Bobby is fixin it for me. It should be back at the chromers soon. Andy dropped off my paint the other day and did an awesome job. Fuck! Im gettin close......Come see the finished bike at Torquefest, it will be @ the King Kustoms booth along with some other cool chops. Stop by, drink a beer, say hi.

WHAT THE HELL?

OK, I USUALLY DON'T TRY TO POINT THINGS OUT AND BE A DICK , BUT......

I USUALLY CHECK CHOPCULT CLASSIFIEDS OUT TO SEE IF THERES ANYTHING I MIGHT LIKE, ANYWHO, I COME ACROSS SOME JAGOFF TRYING TO SELL A "BEDROLL WITH BUILT-IN MATTRESS" FOR 100 BUCKS! NOW C'MON ALREADY. THATS A CHEAP MEXICAN BLANKET AND A 5$ BLOW-UP RAFT, LOOKS EXACTLY LIKE TO ONE I LEFT BEHIND AT POOPY'S, BECAUSE IT WAS 5 FUCKING DOLLARS.
TOTAL FOR THE TWO ITEMS- 25$, ON THE HIGH END!
CUT IT OUT YOU DUMBASS-

A LESSON LEARNED!!

WHENEVER YOU BUY STUFF FROM A CATALOG. YOUR BOUND TO GET BURNED EVERY ONCE IN A WHILE. SO I WAS BY THE LEG'S THE OTHER DAY AND CHRIS WAS TRYING TO FIT HIS CAM COVER. IT JUST WOULD 'NT GO ON. SO AFTER CHECKING WITH SOME PRECISION MEASURING EQUIPMENT. WE FOUND THAT THE BUSHING WAS ABOUT .002 TOO TIGHT. SO OFF IT WENT TO MY SHOP TO BE BORED IN MY MILLING MACHINE. THIS IS NOT A MATTER OF JUST REAMING OPEN THE HOLE WITH SOME KIND OF UNI-BIT FROM HOME DEPOT. AFTER INDICATING WHERE THE HOLE WAS THE BORING BAR WAS CENTERED AND WAS BORED UNTIL THE PLUG GAGE I TURNED IN THE LATHE WOULD SLIDE IN AFTER MEASURING WE HAD A GOOD FIT PLUS OIL CLEARENCE. THE LESSON IS THIS. DON'T TRUST WHAT YOU GET IN THE BOX!!

Time to clean!!!!!

Dropped my frame off at the powdercoaters the other day, so, I have until friday to take care of some odds and ends until I get it back. I polished my kicker cover and alternator cover as well as doin a general douching of my transmission. On to the motor next! If all go's as planned I should be starting final assembly on Friday or Saturday.
